With the crazy times we live in, we’re finding ourselves stuck at home looking for projects. If a spring clean is on your list of projects, you’re going to want to give those dirty, grimy windows a clean. Here are a few DIY window cleaning tips using simple products you likely have around the house!
Creating a window cleaner
Dusty windows will benefit from a mixture of 50% distilled vinegar and 50% tap water. This completely natural solution is chemical-free and completely safe if accidentally ingested or inhaled- so get the kids involved in cleaning too!
*Note – Apple Cider Vinegar is not a good substitute for distilled vinegar as it will leave streaks on your windows.
Outdoor windows will likely need a little something extra to remove the pollen, dust, and grime that builds up from urban living. Add a couple of drops of dish soap to strengthen your window cleaning solution.
*Note – be conservative with your soap- too much soap will be hard to remove and leave a film on your windows.
Tools of the trade
Right now, we are all looking to be conservative with our paper product usage, so save those paper towels! For indoors, the Newspaper is a favourite of ours. It leaves your windows sparkling and streak-free – but your hands will get a little dirty from the ink! Another option is a microfiber cloth. If you don’t have any of these options available- what about those old sweats or t-shirts you were going to donate after your closet cleanout? As long as the fabric is lint-free, you’ve got a great solution.
Now for the outdoor windows- we recommend a large sponge or a squeegee to start these projects and get the heavy grime off your windows. After they are dry, go back over your windows with the Newspaper or microfiber cloth for windows so clean you might forget they are there!
*A couple of squeegee tips: be sure to dip your squeegee in your cleaning solution before you start. Always clean from the top down, and wipe the edge of the squeegee after every stroke.
Happy Spring Cleaning!!
